Light Chime

2024

Glass, Acrylic, Wood and Ceramic Beads, Monofilament, Diffraction Grating Film

Inspired by the electromagnetic spectrum, this artwork is a celebration of the colors of visible light which fall in the middle of the spectrum. Most of what we know about the universe is informed by light. Light is energy. Light gives life. White light is the combination of all wavelengths of visible light. I have always been fascinated by refraction—when waves change direction and we are able to see the different components of white light broken down into the colors of the rainbow. A cascade of color, Light Chime holds scattered surprises and elevates visual play.  It would not be without the intricate landscape of the human eye, working in harmony with waves of light, that we are able to perceive this rich spectrum of colors. Never the same twice, this installation is further activated by the sun's changing position—both daily and annually— in the sky. Guests spent multiple weeks making unique beads from clay which were then fired, glazed and strung.
